Why Is Nature Named After People?

There is something that I’ve been wondering about recently. I’ve been wondering why it is that a lot of things in nature are named after people. I suppose that there are a few different reasons although the truth is that I don’t know for sure. I’m not even sure how to look this up.
I know that there are a lot of things in nature that are named after the people who discovered them. A lot of state parks and things like that have been named in this way. People who donate a lot of money or land to something like this might also have an area named after them. Additionally, important people may be commemorated in this way.
However, I’m not sure about common names. For example, why is Lake Louise named what it is? Or why do we name hurricanes after specific names like Katrina or Felix? I’m not sure how these names got picked or why we would choose to use common names to identify things in nature. My best guess is that we try to personify big things in nature so that we feel like we can understand them a little bit better. I don’t know if that’s true though. What do you think?
