Recreate Big Dreams in Small Ways

spa

One of the keys to happiness in my life has been that I have learned how to recreate my big dreams in smaller ways. I believe that any dream can be broken down to its basics and lived out in this lifetime.

For example, let’s say that you really wish that you could go on vacation to a Fiji island resort spa. You may not be able to afford to go to a Fiji spa right now. However, you can probably afford to create a vacation spa day in your own home.

To do this, you would learn what you can about Fiji. It’s a beach destination where scuba diving is popular. You could recreate this by buying a painting of Fiji and hanging it in your home. Alternatively, you could put a Fiji scene on your computer’s screensaver. Then, take a day off of work to have a spa day. Get a massage therapist to come to your home to provide a treatment for you in front of your new painting. Relax. Indulge. It’s almost like a vacation.

I’m not saying that you should give up on your big dreams. If you get the chance to go to Fiji, definitely go. I’m just saying that you can get to the core of your dreams and bring the essence of them into your daily life. It makes life happier.

Get Your Facts Right

Whether I’m watching a movie or reading a book, one of the things that bugs me more than anything else is when there are glaring errors that they should have caught — and would have, if they had done their research.

For example, in the movie Panic Room the little girl, who is diabetic, is crashing rapidly — in the middle of the night.  You are more likely to crash in the middle of the night than when you are awake, so there’s no way she would be on a dose of insulin that would cause her to crash when she would normally be sleeping.  They try to explain it away by saying that getting worked up makes her crash, but as a diabetic I can actually tell you that exercise makes you crash, while stress makes your blood sugar go high.  But there’s much less danger that way, and it wouldn’t have made for quite as interesting a plot twist, so I think they purposely overlooked the inaccuracy for the sake of building tension.

There are other examples that I can’t  think of right now.  I often wonder how many mistakes are made in highly technical shows, such as the medical and lawyer shows that were quite popular on TV for a while.  Like that show Nip/Tuck that was on for a while — did they get all of the details regarding plastic surgery and hair replacement correct?  I’ll bet someone in the industry has a really difficult time watching those types of shows, because of it.

How to Visit Canada

I have always wanted to go to Canada. I think that this is a longing that a lot of Americans have. We are basically taught that Canada is a bit better than here in every way. I don’t know is that’s true but I’d certainly like to explore the country as a visitor.

I’m trying to decide how I want to visit Canada. Here are some of my top Canada vacation ideas:

  • A romantic getaway to Canada. This would be my ideal choice for visiting Canada. Winter or summer, I think it would be a great romantic vacation destination. Maybe it would even be good for a honeymoon?!
  • A family trip to Canada. I enjoy traveling with my family. My family enjoys going to new destinations. For that reason I kind of think that a family vacation and Canada would go hand-in-hand.
  • See Canada with friends. I really enjoy group trips with a handful of my friends. I bet there are some fun urban areas of Canada that would be great for this type of trip.
  • Going there on my own. I don’t really mind traveling by myself. If I can’t get anyone else to go with me then I’ll probably eventually just plan a trip to Canada on my own.

Why I’m Boycotting Bride Wars

The other night my husband and I sat down to a movie, and I was horrified to see a preview of the movie Bride Wars, which as far as I can tell is the most stereotypical and UN-funny depiction of brides that I have ever seen.

The premise seems to be that these two young women, who have been best friends forever and shared the same dream of getting married in the same venue, end up with their weddings scheduled on the same day.  So because the venue is apparently more important to both of them than their friendship (?) they start trying to sabotage one another’s weddings, ignoring the glaringly obvious solution of having a double wedding.

I really hate the whole bridezilla stereotype, and this one just seems to take the cake.  The idea that women are so superficial that they would blow off a lifelong friendship over something so fleeting is just ridiculous.  What annoys me most is that movies like this continue this notion — which gets so much support in society that it is, for some women, a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The wedding industry obviously is there for a reason — because brides realy do want to be a virtual princess on their big day — but I think sometimes it takes the focus off of what is really important.  The custom veils and the wedding tiara are fun and special, but they are nowhere near as important as the vows that you are making, the relationship that you are celebrating, or the friends and family that are there to celebrate with you.

3 Great Sports Gift Baskets

Do you know someone who is a hardcore sports fan? Are you always trying to figure out the best new sports-themed gift to give to this person whenever a special occasion comes around? If you haven’t gotten him or her a sports gift basket yet then I’d say this is one of the best choices.

Here is a look at three sports that make for great fan gift baskets:

  • Football. There are so many great little trinkets and things that are made for football fans. Compile a bunch of them into a gift basket and make someone’s day.
  • Golf. Golf gift baskets are among the most popular gift baskets. This is due in part to the fact that they’re great as gifts for businesspeople as well as for people who are general fans of golf. Golf tees and golf towels are among the things that might be in this gift basket.
  • Fishing. People may not be fans of fishing as a sport but a lot of people do engage in it themselves. If you know someone who fishes then one of these sports gift baskets could be a perfect gift.

Of course, any sport works well as a theme for a gift basket. Think about this the next time that you need to shop for a sports lover.
