The lower back is a relatively new place to get a tattoo.  There has been a recent movement by mostly college aged women to get tattoo in this are of their body.  A lot of the tattoos that I have seen there are wings tattoos or even fairy tattoos.  A more artsy tattoo is often the choice on the lower back tattoos because of the area that can be drawn on as well as how much of it will often show.  This part of the body gets a lot of exposure with the clothes that many women wear today.  With the popularity of the low rise jean, the lower back gets more of an audience then ever before!
