Hidden Cameras as Entertainment

One of the most entertaining forms of entertainment can be the media that people don’t know is being taken.  It’s amazing how big of a fool people will make of themselves when they don’t know there is a hidden camera.  For that reason, a spy cam can be a lot of fun — and plenty of obnoxious kids and teens amuse themselves by getting embarrassing videos of friends and family when spycams.

A nanny cam can also capture videos that are a source of embarrassment — or, as often as not, videos that can make or break someone’s career.  I think what people will do when no one is watching shows a lot about their true character.  Personally, I’d rather be the type who does silly things to embarrass myself, rather than being mean and nasty to children when I’m alone with them.

I think another form of entertainment that reminds me of hidden camera videos is the whole reality TV thing.  The people on reality shows usually know that there is a camera on them, but they don’t really know the full story of what is going on.  Therefore I think they do plenty of embarrassing things.  I actually think reality shows often bring out the worst side of human nature, which is why I don’t watch them anymore.

Here’s a little lighthearted fun with embarrassing videos:

What a Weekend!

Donna’s new backyard is gorgeous.  It is just unbelievable, and I can’t believe the amount of money she just burns through on any given day.  She just went to Italy and spent nine thousand euro on two purses.  That is euro mind you, not dollars.  Nine thousand euro translated into dollars is a lot of money.  I don’t know the exchange rate off the top of my head, but it’s a lot.  Anyway, her back yard is great; the outdoor kitchen plans are obviously very professional, with a lot of depth created and a really good use of the space.  I’ll say this about Donna: she’s not that bright, but she knows how to spend a buck.  She has an out door kitchen with an outdoor fireplace, and two three year olds.  Did she really think the very best idea for a large entertainment space that blocks the way to the kid’s play area was to fill it with fire? Obviously Joey, the marginally more idiotic of her two spoiled and obnoxious children, decided it would be a great idea to chase his brother, trip, and fall into the fire.  He only burned his hand, but the way Donna started howling I actually thought it was chopped off.  I’m not going back there anytime soon.

Spouses as Caregivers

Although spouses seem like a logical choice to assist with the elderly they can often get overwhelmed. From proper diet to medicine doses and personal health care an elderly spouse as sole caregiver can become exhausted and embittered.

After my grandmother had a serious stroke her husband became a 24 hour nurse, cook, cleaner and errand runner. A devoted husband he never had a moment to himself in his golden years. Finally at the insistence of their kids they looked into family caregiver resources. Starting with their personal acquaintances they found an old friend to hire for house cleaning duties and cooking a hot meal twice a week. This small act helped both my grandfather and grandmother enormously.

Inspired, my grandparents sought out caregiver training agencies to assist even further.  Through the training agencies they hired a graduate of the caregiver training programs.  The caregiver assisted in dispensing medicine, personal hygiene, (right down to coloring and setting my grandmothers hair) and fixing light meals.

The added assistance allowed my grandfather to leave the house and meet friends or run errands without worrying about his wife’s welfare.  Hiring a part-time caregiver  also lifted some of the responsibilities from their children, who had families of their own. Now the family can spend more quality time together.

Going Back to School

I’m an audiologist who realized I needed to go back to school.  There have been a lot of new developments in my profession.  People seem to think that all we do is sell hearing aids, but that isn’t true at all.  Hearing is a very complicated process that involves specialized anatomy as well as the brain.  A lot of things can go wrong in what is a very involved pathway, and any one of those can interfere with proper hearing function.

I wanted to continue working to support my growing family, so I enrolled in one of the Arizona School of Health Sciences Online Programs, the Transitional Doctor of Audiology Online program.  I took courses in health informatics, cochlear implants, x-ray, pharmacology , etc.  I was glad that some of it was review, but I learned a ton of new stuff; the instructors were very knowledgeable and my made my distance learning experience very worthwhile.  It was hard work, but I don’t regret doing it, not for a minute.  Recently my wife mentioned she was thinking about taking an online course herself.  She is an occupational therapist, and the school has an  Advanced Occupational Therapy Online program.  I’m encouraging her to do it.
