How I Ran a Profitable Business in Elementary School

When I talk to people about the early phases of their new businesses, I am always astounded by what they tell me was their first experience in profitability. They tell me how they sold their first product at age 25 or age 30 or how they never thought to start up a business until they were almost 40 years old. But, they are thinking in terms of how they make money online, not the first time they truly tried to make money in a business format.

When I was 9 years old, I had a genius idea to raise money so I could buy presents for my family on Christmas. I was a decent artist and a genius tracer, so I would simply create detailed, custom drawings of cartoon characters from my coloring books for my classmates for $.25 a piece. I was able to make $30 in the first week alone and soon had three other classmates and friends helping me with the branding of products by sharing magazines I had gathered from Disney and Nickelodeon that I would loan out for a small fee during recess. My promotional products distributor was as an 8 year old named Timmy and by the time Christmas arrived, I had gathered more than $150 in lunch money quarters from my classmates.

I don’t’ imagine everyone has the same stories from grade school, but the entrepreneurial spirit can arise in the oddest of situations, showing itself in nearly any form – you need only know where to look for it.

The 12 Step Approach for Drug Addiction

If you have ever tried to get help for either your own or a loved one’s drug addiction, you have probably already heard the ’12 Steps’ mentioned. The 12-step program was originated in the 1930’s in Alcoholics Anonymous and has been since used in other self-help groups such as Cocaine Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Although many proponents of the 12-step program hail its success, it remains largely unproven. Since the groups do not take attendance and there is no registration, it is difficult to get reliable statistics pertaining to its actual success rate. And since it is a largely spiritually based program, it is certainly not for everyone.

Someone who is battling crystal meth addiction for example might benefit from something more structured in scientific results than a 12-step program. Every person, and every addiction is very different and each should be treated accordingly. Many people who suffer from extreme addictions have sought help through drug rehab centers. There are many different types of centres and many use different approaches. Some still use the 12-step program and others have ventured into more dynamic approaches. However, it is important to find the program that suits your personal needs and belief system.

3 Ways to Use Promotional Products in Your Business

Promotional products are things that have your company name, logo, and often your contact information on them.  These items are often give away or sold at a nominal price to customers and potential customers.  Promotional products are great for marketing your business, especially for establishing brand name recognition for your company.

Here are three ideas on how you can use promotional products to market your business.

  1. Give promotional pens away like candy.  People love free stuff, even if it’s something as disposable as pens.  In fact, I think many people especially love free pens — after all, who hasn’t had the experience of needing a pen and being unable to find one?  Take advantage of this by giving away pens with your company name, logo, and phone number or website URL.  You can give them away at conferences, trade shows, or even just pass them out to other local businesses to use at their cash registers.
  2. Give coffee shops, cafes, and bookstores a supply of promotional bookmarks.  Independent stores like these tend to be happy to help other local businesses market themselves.  Promotional bookmarks work especially well at bookstores, where customers might start reading a book, decide to buy it, and need a way to mark their place.
  3. Give your employees corporate gifts.  What seems like a show of generosity and appreciation to your employees will also benefit your business.  When you give your employees gifts that they can take with them and use, such as promotional bags and travel mugs, they are also broadcasting your company name to anyone who happens to see them.  Since their use of the item implies an endorsement of the company, the "advertisement" also gains the power of a word-of-mouth recommendation.

There are many more ways that you can use promotional products to promote your business, but hopefully these suggestions will help to get you started.

iPhone Ringtones: What’s the Point?

I find it interesting that the iPhone, a device that combines a cell phone with a device that plays music, still requires users to download ringtones.  This seems remarkably silly to me.  Why can’t the iPhone allow you to simply set downloaded songs as ringtones?

The answer is, of course, all about money: Apple makes more money if they charge extra for ringtones.  Basically, iTunes charges you a buck per song to take a song you already own and convert it into a ringtone — something you would think should be able to be done for free.  (After all, it doesn’t cost you anything to convert a CD audio file to MP3, WAV, or iTunes format — all you need is the software, which is usually free.)

If, on the other hand, you want a song you don’t yet own as a ringtone, it’ll cost you two bucks — $1 to buy the song, and $1 to have it converted.

Thankfully, there are ways to get around Apple’s greed.  There are a number of ways to "hack" your iTunes and fool it into thinking you paid for your iPhone ringtones — evidently the file conversion is actually little more than a smaller file, a different file extension, and a different location in iTunes.  There are also a number of websites out there that offer free or cheap T-Mobile, AT&T, or Cingular ringtones.
